Tranquil sunrise for resting seals

Seal Sitters’ dispatch received a call about 8:40 pm last night from a concerned citizen regarding a seal on a private beach. Our first responder walked the beach as darkness fell and through binoculars could see an adult seal alert and stretching at the water’s edge. The seal did not appear in distress. In the background, she could see a smaller seal silhouetted on the Alki platform (aka the Joy D. platform). Since the beach was quickly enveloped in total darkness, our volunteer left so that the seals could rest undisturbed. Seals often use the quiet of night to rest onshore. At first light an adult and yearling were hauled out on the platform (photo above) - most likely the two from last night and both appeared healthy and very observant. The waters of the Sound were unusually still until the Vashon water taxi sped by, creating a large wake which prompted them to disappear into the water. The smaller yearling did return briefly. A comparison of markings has determined that the adult was not Otis Redding.
