Solstice pup found dead on Christmas Day

The harbor seal pup nicknamed “Solstice” that hauled out on a Lincoln Park beach on Dec 22nd was found dead on Golden Gardens beach late Christmas Day. According to Kristin Wilkinson of NOAA, the seal was picked up from a South Puget Sound island over the summer and went through rehab at Paws. The animal was fitted for a telemetry device and released by Fish and Wildlife back into the South Sound. Since the seal was moving over a large area (from West Seattle to Vashon Island, up to Golden Gardens), was plump and coming and going from the beaches, the seal’s behavior seemed normal. Kristin says she was shocked that the animal had passed and was very disappointed that the carcass was gone with no chance to do a necropsy. NOAA had been tracking the seal since July.
